Madness
A book for many men, some women and a handful of Chinese people. A bizarre tale of good morals, sick sexuality, whisky, the Dutch East Indies of "back then", a brain tumour, deadly loneliness and murdered words.
"Indië" is the Dutch name for the former Dutch East Indies, which is now Indonesia. "Waanzin" can also be translated as "Insanity" or "Delusion", but "Madness" fits the tone of the blurb best.
Decay
The discovery of a drifting corpse in the IJ is the start of a magical tale with a homeless man, a computer nerd and a psychiatrist as its protagonists. Each one fights his own battle in the open asylum that is Amsterdam. The least lonely of the three is Sjakie, the homeless man. Ever since his unfortunate fall from an oak tree in Brabant, twelve people have been living in his head, including a doctor, an intellectual, Lady Di and a heroin whore. At the centre of it all is the black ball with unknown contents. Three lost souls and a brutal murder. In this absurdist tale, the worlds of a homeless man, a psychiatrist and a computer nerd come together.
Jodoh
The magical story of one man's journey into a past that is not his but yet intricately woven into his own life. Intrigued by the wartime diary of his deceased father, Rudolph the Casanova son finds himself in Indonesia, looking for answers to set him free. A juxtapose of Dutch occupation of Indonesia with scenes depicting colonial tensions and modern day cosmopolitan shallowness set in the backdrop of Amsterdam and Padang. A journey of self-discovery and finding one’s destiny through a wartime diary, a mysterious Indonesian woman and unlocking a withheld past. A story that reminds us that genuine love is not about the blind quest for perfection but the acceptance of imperfections. A love so true and powerful it connects two countries, two cultures, two times and two men who never knew each other.
